My Daily Journal Page Challenge
In March 2009, I started a Daily Journal Page Challenge on my art blog, My Mane Blowing in the Wind. This was a personal art challenge in which I would create one page for every day of the year. Up to that point I had increasingly heard “the call of the muse” but had never pursued my art and creativity on a day-to-day basis.
I wondered if I created a journal page a day for a year, would I feel differently about my self as an artist (or creative person) at the end of that time period? Would it assist me in developing a creative discipline? What benefits would I receive from the execution of it?
I decided to take up the gauntlet and committed to creating one journal page every day for a year. Moreover, I created a blog and scanned and posted my photos each day to reinforce my commitment to this challenge.
Well, I’m here to say that doing this challenge paid off big time! At the end of the year I felt an incredible satisfaction and confidence about my artistic abilities. It was so satisfying to see the tangible evidence of my efforts (full little art journals brimming over with color)! I also expanded my art techniques, became familiar with different types of art media, developed a color sense, and had a whole lot of fun doing something creative. Bonus: I developed a joyful anticipation of creating something everyday. I was so happy in this goal that I stuck with the challenge for 3 1/2 years and filled 40 journals!
As a result of sticking to and developing my art through my Daily Journal Page Challenge, I now have an art studio in a local community arts center where I sell my hand-soldered jewelry, create altered books and journals, and teach monthly creativity workshops.
If you are interested in learning how to set up an art challenge for yourself -- I am super-excited to announce that I will be re-offering in March 2016 Your Daily Creative Practice: 30 Days of Pocket-Sized Journal Collages to Grow Your Creativity. Through weekly videos, instructional pdfs, and daily prompts I teach you my process for establishing a creative discipline and exploring your creativity. It's fun and easy and will bring you much joy as you watch yourself blossom creatively.
